Gold Prices Rise Amidst Mixed Market Performance

Global gold and silver prices closed mixed on Monday, with international markets showing little movement. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, December gold futures rose by 0.37 percent to settle at $4,697.80 per ounce, while September silver futures fell by 1.35 percent to close at $68.594 per ounce.

The mixed performance in commodities markets came as U.S. stocks closed mixed on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 140.15 points, or 0.26 percent, to 53,417.16, while the S and P 500 sank by 21.51 points, or 0.28 percent, to 7,652.86. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 200.264 points, or 0.77 percent, to 25,980.19.

The tech sector saw significant weakness, with semiconductor stocks leading the decline. This was attributed to broad weakness across chipmakers, following reports that Nvidia plans to implement price hikes on select AI server configurations. Shares of SanDisk, Western Digital, SK Hynix, Micron Technology, and Seagate Technology all finished lower.

Geopolitical developments also played a role in market movements, with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announcing new sanctions aimed at further isolating Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump escalated trade frictions with Canada by announcing intentions to raise tariffs on Canadian cars and automotive parts to 50 percent effective January 1, 2027.

Market attention is now focused on two critical catalysts: Nvidia's highly anticipated second-quarter earnings release on Wednesday, expected to serve as a vital referendum on the ongoing AI investment cycle, and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's scheduled address at the central bank's annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium.
