Gold Prices Slump as Fed Rate Expectations Trump Geopolitical Tensions
The gold market is experiencing a paradoxical situation where geopolitical tensions that normally trigger a flight to safety have failed to lift prices, while the prospect of tighter Federal Reserve policy has become the dominant force driving gold prices. Spot gold settled near $4,328.81 per ounce at Tuesday's close, down 2.8% on the day and 5.9% lower on the week.
The shift in market sentiment can be attributed to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's address at the Jackson Hole symposium, where he signaled that the central bank's inflation fight was far from finished. This hawkish pivot was immediately reflected in markets, with gold suffering its steepest one-day decline since June 10.
Despite the recent pullback, which has recast the metal's recent trajectory, gold still shows a 6.7% gain over the past 30 days. The fundamental picture retains considerable strength, with net inflows of 92.8 tonnes into physically backed gold ETFs in the first three weeks of August and central banks purchasing 863.3 tonnes of gold in 2025.
