Gold Prices Soar 173,500% Since India's Independence in 1947
India's gold market has seen significant growth over the past 79 years since Independence in 1947. The current retail price of gold is ₹1,54,500 per 10 grams, a rise from ₹89 per 10 grams at the time of India's independence.
According to gold experts, this represents an astonishing 173,500% return on investment for those who have held onto gold since 1947. This growth has been driven by global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump's tariffs, and conflicts between Russia and Ukraine.
Avanish Gorakshkar, a SEBI-registered market expert, noted that the importance of gold investment in India was realized after the 2008 global economic slowdown. During this period, people in India came to understand that gold is an investor's haven when other investments like equities and bonds start declining.
Anuj Gupta, another SEBI-registered market expert, stated that gold has been a favorite investment option among Indians since independence. The average gold price for 1947 was around ₹89 per 10 grams, whereas today it is near ₹1,54,500 per 10 grams, delivering approximately 173,500% return post-independence.
