Gold Prices Soar Amid Renewed Fiscal Concerns and ETF Demand

Gold prices have surged from their July lows to around $4,600/oz, fueled by renewed investment demand and growing concerns over the US fiscal outlook.

The recent rebound follows the US Treasury's decision to increase its purchases of longer-dated government debt, with the maximum size of buyback operations in the 10-to-30-year segment rising from $2bn to at least $4bn.

Despite this move being short-lived and long-term yields recovering much of their decline, gold continued to strengthen, suggesting that the rally is not solely a response to lower yields.

The prospect of larger Treasury buybacks has refocused attention on government borrowing and fiscal credibility, reviving concerns about currency debasement and reinforcing gold's appeal as a store of value.

Investment demand is recovering, with global gold-backed ETFs attracting $3bn in July, lifting their holdings by 23 tonnes according to the World Gold Council. Central banks also remain a significant source of demand, with reported net purchases reaching 51 tonnes in June.
