Gold Prices Soar in India as Conflict in Iran Drives Safe-Haven Demand
The gold rate in India has experienced a significant increase on August 22, 2026. Twenty-four carat gold is now quoted at ₹16,309 a gram and 22 carat at ₹14,950, up ₹381 and ₹349 respectively from the previous day.
Gold rates vary across cities, with Delhi holding a fifteen rupee premium and Ahmedabad having a five rupee premium. Chennai's 18 carat rate is about ₹500 above the rest in that city, a quirk that appears at 18 carat and nowhere else.
The tracker reports today's move as plus ₹152 a gram on 24 carat, but this number is based on the morning quote, which does not reflect the actual market movement. The correct figure for 24 carat gold is ₹16,309, which is exactly in line with the MCX price of ₹1,63,090 per ten grams.
The increase in gold prices can be attributed to safe-haven demand due to the Iran conflict and the US Treasury's expanded bond buyback. The Indian counter has recovered ground quickly, but it remains to be seen whether ₹16,309 is a level or a waypoint for the market.
