Gold Prices Surge for Third Session Amid Rate Hopes and Geopolitical Tensions

Gold prices continued their upward trend for a third consecutive session on August 11, driven by expectations of lower US interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty. The COMEX gold futures contract rose $64.60 or 1.46% to $4,484.30 per ounce, with an intraday high of $4,485 an ounce and a low of $4,443.20 an ounce.

The potential for easier monetary policy has boosted demand for the precious metal, as gold does not pay interest and becomes relatively more attractive when yields on interest-bearing assets fall. The US Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates unchanged in July, despite dissenting opinions from three officials, has contributed to this trend.

Investors are now focusing on upcoming inflation data, with the US consumer price index (CPI) and producer price index (PPI) releases scheduled for August 12 and 13. A softer reading could strengthen expectations of lower rates and support gold prices, while a stronger-than-expected reading could put pressure on those expectations.

Silver outperformed gold in Tuesday's session, rising 2.03% to $66.595 per ounce. The metal has gained more than gold in percentage terms, with the COMEX silver contract hitting a high of $66.60 an ounce during the session.
