Trump's Inflation Claims Debunked by Data
President Trump recently stated that prices are 'all coming down now,' but data shows that they're mostly going up. The statement was made during an interview on Fox News, where he discussed his administration's efforts to combat inflation.
According to official federal data, since Trump began his second term in January 2025, most types of consumer goods have increased in price. Several major categories have risen faster than the overall increase of 4.3%, including airfare (up 12.5%), electricity (up 8%), and housing and clothing (up 5% each).
However, there are some exceptions to this trend. Prices for new and used cars have fallen modestly, as well as eggs, bacon, and bread. But many grocery categories have risen, including coffee (35%), ground beef (23%), steak (21%), sugar and sweets (9%), chicken breast (5.3%), and fruits and vegetables (5.2%).
The Iran war has had a significant impact on energy prices, with gasoline up by 34% since Trump began his second term. Other types of energy have also risen, including fuel oil (24%), natural gas (12%), and electricity (8%).
