Gold prices reached $4,122 per ounce on Thursday, November 5, 2026, marking a $76 increase from the previous day and a $145 rise compared to the same period last year. This upward trend reflects a 1.88% daily gain and a 3.65% annual increase, though it shows a slight 0.75% decline from one month ago.

Investors often turn to gold as a hedge against inflation and market volatility. Unlike stocks, which averaged a 10.7% annual return between 1971 and 2024, gold has historically offered a more stable, albeit lower, average return of 7.9%. Financial advisor James Taska notes that exchange-traded funds (ETFs) provide a convenient way to invest in gold without the challenges of storing physical assets.

Gold can be purchased in various forms, including bars, coins, jewelry, futures contracts, and funds. The spot price, which indicates the current market value for immediate purchase, is influenced by factors like demand and economic conditions. A higher spot price typically signals stronger demand, while a lower price may reflect reduced interest or economic uncertainty.

Despite its appeal, gold is not without risks. Its price can be volatile, and while it serves as a store of value during economic turmoil, it may underperform compared to stocks during periods of economic strength. Investors should weigh these factors when considering gold as part of their portfolio.
