Gold Prices Tumble as Strong Employment Data Boosts Fed Rate Hike Expectations
The US employment data released last Friday sent shockwaves through the gold market, causing spot gold to plummet over 2% in value.
The strong nonfarm payroll report showed a surge of 162,000 jobs in August, far exceeding the market expectation of 56,000. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%, and the July data was revised upward from a decrease of 23,000 to an increase of 21,000.
The robust employment numbers reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates this month, weakening gold's appeal in the process. Geopolitical tensions also rose as clashes between the US and Iran erupted again in the Strait of Hormuz, adding another layer of complexity to the already pressured gold price.
