Gold Prices Weather Fed Tightening Bets and Oil Price Decline
Gold prices remained relatively stable on Thursday as market expectations of further Federal Reserve policy tightening weighed against a decline in oil prices. The non-yielding metal is under pressure due to rising interest rates, which reduce its appeal relative to interest-bearing investments.
The US Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates last week has led investors to bet on another rate hike in late October. This stance, coupled with the strengthening economy and mounting inflation pressures, is pushing gold lower.
Ross Maxwell, chief strategy officer at VT Markets, said that a clearer signal of another rate hike would pressure gold lower. He added that investors are currently focused on the Fed's higher-for-longer stance following last week's rate increase, fluctuations in the US dollar and Treasury yields, and Middle East developments related to oil and energy supply risks.
Meanwhile, oil prices edged lower as Iran expressed its openness to diplomacy to end the US-Iran conflict. However, significant differences remain between the two countries on how to achieve a resolution.
