Gold Prices Weigh on Indian Buyers Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Indian gold market is facing a slowdown due to high prices and geopolitical tensions. Although gold prices are currently lower than their peak in August, they are still high enough to deter buyers. The uncertainty surrounding wars between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the US-Israel and Iran conflicts, has increased the value of gold.
The rising crude oil prices have put additional pressure on the Indian rupee, making imports more expensive. Additionally, the low demand for US bonds due to falling treasury yields is expected to further increase gold prices. The government's lack of action to stimulate demand has led to a decline in consumption and spending, with people opting instead to trade-in or swap their existing jewelry.
Despite its cultural significance, gold purchases have decreased, with buyers preferring lighter designs that are more affordable. Corporate retailers have taken advantage of this trend by offering premium prices for such ornaments. The slump in sales has also affected other industries, including automobile makers and white goods manufacturers.
