Gold Purchasing Program Raises Questions About Tanzanian Economy
The Tanzanian government has launched a domestic gold purchasing program to boost the country's economy. The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) announced the initiative in September 2023, calling on industry stakeholders to participate and strengthen the national economy.
However, experts argue that simply accumulating real gold does not automatically boost a country's currency strength. From an economic perspective, gold enhances monetary credibility only if it is widely recognized, fully traceable, serialised, independently verifiable, and readily traded on global markets.
The key difference between having market-recognised monetary gold and unverified gold is that the former can be easily accepted in international financial transactions. Central banks value liquidity more than asset purity, and internationally recognised gold reserves are essential for a country's economic stability.
