Gold Rallies to $4,435 as Dollar Weakness Takes Center Stage
Gold prices surged to $4,435 per ounce on Tuesday, erasing losses from the previous session as dollar weakness offset rate-hike gloom. The Japanese yen's strength against the US Dollar Index was the primary catalyst for gold's advance.
The yen is approaching its strongest level against the dollar this year, with market expectations of a Bank of Japan rate hike building. This has led to capital flowing into yen-denominated assets and indirectly pressuring the greenback.
However, gold's rally was capped by headwinds from escalating US-Iran tensions, pushing Brent crude towards $100 per barrel, and traders pricing in a 60% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike next week. The upcoming U.S. CPI report will be crucial in determining the direction of gold prices.
If inflation comes in above market expectations, rate-hike bets will strengthen, putting pressure on gold. Conversely, if the data prints below expectations, expectations for monetary tightening may ease, opening room for gold to rise.
