Gold Resurges as Central Banks Update Risk Models

The concept of a monetary reset is often misunderstood as a sudden collapse of a currency. However, it's actually a slow and gradual shift in how the world stores value and settles trade.

Historically, reserve currencies have faded over decades, not days. The pound sterling, for example, took roughly 40 years to yield to the dollar.

Currently, there are four structural shifts happening that fit this pattern: the U.S. Treasury market is under pressure due to large fiscal deficits and declining foreign demand; central banks are buying gold instead of Treasuries as a risk management strategy; private stablecoin issuers like Tether are building massive gold reserves; and sovereign institutions are updating their risk models in response to Washington's actions.

The shift towards gold is driven by its unique characteristics: it cannot be frozen, sanctioned, or defaulted on. Central banks have bought over 1,000 tonnes of gold annually from 2022 to 2024, a pace with no modern precedent before 2022. By the end of 2025, gold had reached 27% of global central bank reserves, surpassing U.S. Treasuries at 22%, according to the European Central Bank.
