Gold Soars on Diplomatic Breakthrough Hopes
Gold prices have surged to a seven-week high after news emerged of a proposed deal between Iran and Oman that could lead to a diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East. The agreement would give Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, reducing tensions in the region.
The price of spot gold rose 0.5% to $4,265.22 per ounce on August 6, its highest level since June 18. This comes despite fears that energy-driven inflation would push interest rates higher and hurt gold prices. However, with market expectations for a September US rate hike easing to 55%, gold has become an attractive investment option.
IG market analyst Tony Sycamore noted that the sharp rally is due to building optimism about a diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East. He added that a sustained break above the 200-day moving average could pave the way for a stronger recovery towards the $5,000 mark.
