Gold prices rose on Monday as tensions between the US and Iran eased, sending oil prices plummeting by over 4%.

The US dollar index fell 0.3%, making gold more affordable for holders of other currencies.

Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, said 'Gold is a clear beneficiary today of the dual price action in oil and the U.S. dollar.'

Investors are now waiting for the US Federal Reserve's policy decision due on July 28-29, where rates are expected to remain unchanged.

The FedWatch Tool indicates a 76% chance of a rate hike in September.
