Gold Surges 7.35% Amid Surprise US Jobs Report

The recent US nonfarm payroll report sent shockwaves through the financial markets, sparking an immediate and significant reaction in gold prices. The report showed a decline of 23,000 jobs in July, far short of the expected 80,000 new positions. This unexpected downturn has led to a reevaluation of the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory.

The data revealed that hourly earnings rose only 0.1% month over month and 3.2% year over year, while the unemployment rate unexpectedly ticked down to 4.1%. The participation rate, however, slid to its lowest level in five decades when excluding pandemic distortions. This combination of factors has diminished expectations for a September rate hike, with CME FedWatch data showing a probability of 44%, down from 55% previously.

The impact on gold was immediate and substantial, surging by 2.33% to close at $4,399.80 per ounce on Friday, capping a remarkable seven-day advance of 7.35%. The dollar index softened in response to the diminished prospect of tightening, which is traditionally supportive for gold.

The broader market reaction was notable, with equities rallying alongside bullion rather than at its expense. The S&P 500 closed at a record high of 7,757.64, while Germany's DAX also hit an all-time high. This simultaneous strength suggests the move was less about risk aversion and more about a wholesale repricing of the Fed's trajectory.
