Gold Surges Past $4,400 as Inflation Data Eases Rate Hike Fears
The gold market has been on the rise over the past month after hitting its lowest point of the year. Wednesday's session saw spot bullion close at $4,478.80 per ounce, marking a 1.2 percent gain and the strongest finish in roughly ten weeks.
This move above the $4,400 threshold is significant, as it was previously seen as out of reach just a month ago when gold prices were plummeting.
The latest US inflation snapshot provided the catalyst for this turnaround, with consumer price index numbers coming in line with expectations. The 0.1 percent month-over-month and 3.4 percent year-over-year increases did little to revive hopes for another Federal Reserve rate hike at the September meeting, according to CME FedWatch.
This shift has provided a weight off gold's shoulders, allowing it to gain a full 10 percent over the past 30 days due in part to rate-cut speculation. However, this rally has also brought the market to a technical crossroads, with some strategists warning of short-term overheating.
