Gold Surges Past $4,600 as Debt Concerns Rise

Spot gold has surpassed $4,600 and broken above its 200-day moving average for the first time in months. This milestone comes despite long-term Treasury yields remaining elevated.

The decoupling of gold from Treasury yields is a significant signal following this quarter's key macro news: the US Treasury's expanded long-bond buyback program.

According to Morgan Stanley, gold's reaction has shifted from being influenced by yields to being driven by causes of higher yields. These include wider fiscal deficits, debt expansion, and concerns about fiat debasement.

Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio views this as a fiscal inflection point. He warns that the government's financial condition is at an inflection point due to a roughly $2 trillion annual shortfall, about $1 trillion in interest costs, and debt-service/refinancing burdens he equates to roughly $11 trillion in scale.

Dalio sees three steps to address this issue: reducing government spending, increasing tax revenue, and lowering interest rates. He emphasizes that all three need to happen concurrently to prevent a traumatic adjustment.
