Gold Surges to Seven-Week High on Diplomatic Optimism and Weaker Dollar
Gold prices surged to their highest level in seven weeks on Thursday, driven by a softer US dollar and optimism over a potential diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $4,254.98 per ounce, with US gold futures also increasing 0.2% to $4,312.80.
Market analyst Tony Sycamore attributed the sharp rally to building optimism about a diplomatic resolution in the region, which would reduce pressure on oil prices and interest rates, creating a 'clear tailwind for gold.'
A proposed deal between Iran and Oman could lead to Tehran gaining control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. This development has been seen as a potential catalyst for a stronger recovery in gold prices, with Sycamore predicting that a sustained break above the 200-day moving average could pave the way for a move towards $5,000.
Investors are also awaiting the July US nonfarm payrolls report scheduled for release on Friday. A soft reading would add support to gold, while a strong rebound could create short-term pressure as markets reassess the policy timeline.
