Gold Tests Critical Trend Line After Sharp Pullback

Gold has reached a critical juncture, testing a key trend line that has held for three years. After peaking above $5,600 an ounce earlier this year, gold experienced a nearly 30% decline to a low of $3,960 in midsummer. This sharp pullback did not end the rally, as buyers stepped in at the $3,960 mark, driving prices back to $4,697 in August. The subsequent pullback has held above $4,000, keeping gold on its long-standing trend line.

Looking ahead, the next key levels to watch are $4,467, where the 150-day moving average sits, and the August high near $4,697. Long-term moving averages, such as the 300, 400, and 500-day averages, are all trending upward, indicating a strong long-term bullish trend.

Gold mining shares are also at a critical decision point, with larger producers like Barrick Mining Corporation, Alamos Gold Inc., and IAMGOLD Corporation pulling back alongside bullion. Barrick reported strong second-quarter results, with gold production reaching 796,000 ounces and revenue climbing 44% to $5.29 billion. Alamos Gold generated $143.5 million in free cash flow and expects significant growth beginning in 2027. IAMGOLD is ramping up production at Côté Gold, with expectations of rising production and falling unit costs.

For smaller producers, the leverage to the gold price is even higher. JZR Gold Inc. is trading near the low end of its range, with its Vila Nova Gold Project in Brazil moving into regular operations. The company is focusing on increasing operating hours, improving plant reliability, and raising the volume of material processed. The next operating updates will be crucial in determining whether Vila Nova provides investors with a reason to look past the share-price chart.
