Gold Treads Water Above $4,000 as Fed Holds Rates Steady

Gold has maintained its value above $4,000 an ounce as of July 31, 2026, despite experiencing some profit-taking pressure. This stability is largely attributed to two key developments: the US Federal Reserve's decision to maintain interest rates and a notable weakening of the US dollar following Japan's currency intervention.

The Fed's unchanged stance on interest rates provided a significant boost to gold, as lower interest rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold. According to Edward Meir, an analyst at Marex, the seemingly disengaged approach to raising rates by Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh contributed to gold's upward momentum.

The weakening US dollar also supported gold prices, making it more affordable for international buyers and stimulating demand. The Bank of Japan's intervention to strengthen the yen against the dollar was a significant factor in this decline, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commenting that the Japanese currency remains 'very undervalued'.

Ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to bolster gold's traditional role as a safe-haven asset, with reports of drone attacks near the Suez Canal and persistent US-Iran tensions keeping global markets on edge. Central banks have also made a strong return to the gold market in 2026, purchasing 289 tonnes in the second quarter alone.
