Gold Treads Water as Oil Prices Weigh on Inflation Fears
Gold prices remained largely unchanged on Wednesday, despite divergent headlines that described its movement in different terms. Spot gold was trading at around $4,360 an ounce.
The metal's direction is being influenced by two opposing forces: the decline in oil prices and the hawkish stance of central banks. A pullback in oil could ease inflation fears and reduce bond yields, making gold more attractive as a safe-haven asset.
However, the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates last week, coupled with its signal that another increase may come before year-end, has added to the headwind against gold. Boston Fed President Susan Collins cited the risk of inflation staying above the 2% target in backing the rate hike.
Analysts are divided on the outlook for gold, with some expecting further declines in the fourth quarter due to a stronger dollar and more hawkish Fed policy. However, others see solid support around $3,800 an ounce from geopolitical risk and central bank buying.
