Gold Upped as Strategic Asset Amid Rising Government Debt

As global government debt levels continue to rise, investors are reevaluating their stance on gold. In an interview with Huitong Network, Christopher Hamilton, Head of Asia-Pacific at Invesco, pointed out that in the context of high government debt, gold is being upgraded from a tactical allocation to a strategic asset.

Hamilton noted that bond market turbulence stems from economic resilience and inflation expectations, emphasizing that gold serves as a barometer of confidence in the monetary system. Despite facing pressures of interest rate and price volatility, continued central bank gold purchases and gold's safe-haven properties support prices, highlighting its irreplaceable allocation value in asset portfolios.

Invesco's quarterly gold outlook published in July pointed out that even if soaring energy prices drive inflation and rate hike expectations higher, sustained central bank gold buying will continue to support gold prices through 2026. The report notes that structural support remains solid. Data from the World Gold Council shows that a record 45% of surveyed central banks expect to increase gold reserves over the next 12 months, and as many as 89% are optimistic about the growth trend of global central bank gold reserves.
