Grain Bull Market Faces Pressure as Weather Conditions Improve

Commodity expert Jim Roemer warns that the bull market in grains may be coming to an end. Improving rainfall in the U.S. Plains, favorable conditions in South America, and high speculative exposure are putting pressure on corn, soybeans, and wheat prices. While the summer rally was partly driven by inflation fears and geopolitical tensions, the U.S. recently produced a record soybean crop and the second-largest corn crop ever.

Roemer notes that wheat was the most affected grain last spring, with U.S. production hitting a 73-year low. However, he anticipates that easing Plains drought and a developing strong El Niño could shift market sentiment. He cautions that a bearish weather outlook doesn't necessarily mean the end of the grain bull market, but it does shift the burden of proof back to the bulls.

The October USDA report was particularly damaging to corn's bullish narrative, estimating U.S. corn production at approximately 16.034 billion bushels. Roemer highlights that large speculative net-long positions could lead to future selling pressure, especially if favorable South American weather persists. For soybeans, strong Brazilian production prospects may eventually outweigh supportive U.S. crush demand.

Roemer emphasizes the importance of the next 60-90 days for South American weather, particularly for Brazil and Argentina. While a strong El Niño could bring wetter conditions, excessive rainfall or later heat and dryness could still alter production expectations. He advises commodity traders to stay vigilant, as the most profitable weather forecasts often involve recognizing when a drought-driven bullish narrative is losing credibility.
