Grain Markets Experience Volatile Week Amid Changing Weather Forecasts

Grain markets saw another volatile week as corn and soybeans moved lower due to changing weather forecasts, weaker outside markets, and speculative selling. According to Jeff Peterson of Heartland Farm Partners, several layers of premium had been added to the market, including weather concerns, crude oil strength, and global shipping risk.

The premium began to unwind as warmer and drier conditions last week, Middle East tensions, and Black Sea concerns supported prices before fading.

As forecasts turned wetter and geopolitical premium faded, speculative traders continued to sell, hitting key support levels. Doug Simon of Tredas noted that crop condition ratings remain a concern, especially compared to last year's levels, with corn ratings running well below year-ago levels.

Crop stress has been contributed by heat, variable rainfall, and limited subsoil moisture, while recent rains across Nebraska were welcome but may have pushed crop development faster than ideal. Peterson expects additional pressure in Monday's USDA Crop Progress report but not a dramatic ratings collapse, predicting one point lower on corn and steady to one lower on beans.
