Grain Markets Face Uncertainty as Combines Roll into Midwest

The grain markets are facing significant uncertainty as combines roll into the Midwest and yield reports start coming in. This year's crop has been marked by volatility, variability in weather and crop conditions, and a record-breaking national corn yield of 186.5 bushels per acre, according to the USDA.

Despite the strong demand for corn, with exports running at record pace and the world corn balance sheet staying tight, prices are still uncertain. The markets are placing their attention on what the national corn and soybean yields will be, with managed money buying up grain futures and looking to be near record-long in both corn and soybeans.

A 'Super El Niño' is also a possibility this winter, which could impact crop yields. Additionally, small-refinery exemptions and EPA decisions that affect demand, as well as China's potential purchasing of U.S. agriculture products, including corn, soybeans, and wheat, are all factors to watch.

Ethan Robson, a hedging strategist at AgMarket.Net, notes that the markets have been volatile in recent years and that patience is a virtue. He also emphasizes the importance of managing risk accordingly, given the substantial risk of loss in trading futures and/or options.
