Grain Markets Reel from Conflict and Drought
The grain markets have experienced significant fluctuations over the past two weeks, driven by various factors such as conflicts in Russia and Ukraine and drought conditions in France.
Russian and Ukrainian attacks on each other's export operations have raised concerns about supply disruptions, contributing to a 'risk premium' in Chicago wheat futures. JPMorgan noted that these attacks could also impact agricultural production by restricting diesel fuel for tractors and trucks.
French maize crops continue to struggle due to hot weather and drought, with only 31% of crops rated as being in good or excellent condition. This marks the eighth consecutive week of decline in crop conditions, with the lowest score recorded in at least 15 years.
