Grain Markets Reel Under Changing Weather Forecasts
Grain markets experienced another volatile week as corn and soybeans declined under pressure from changing weather forecasts, weaker outside markets, and speculative selling.
Jeff Peterson of Heartland Farm Partners explained that a premium had been added to the market due to various factors such as weather concerns, crude oil strength, and global shipping risk. However, this premium began to unwind as forecasts turned wetter and geopolitical tensions eased.
Peterson stated that 'as we saw the weather forecast go ahead and get a little wetter, as we saw the war premium get pulled back out of the market, the speculative trader just kind of continued to sell.'
Crop condition ratings remain a concern, particularly in comparison to last year. Doug Simon of Tredas noted that corn ratings are running well below year-ago levels, with several Plains and western Corn Belt states posting notable declines.
