Grain Markets See Profit-Taking Amid Black Sea Peace Talks

Grain markets reacted to recent developments in the Black Sea peace talks. Rich Nelson from Allendale noted that while Russian President Putin indicated openness to a peace deal with Ukraine, traders remain skeptical about its long-term implications.

Corn and wheat futures saw profit-taking on Thursday, following new contract highs on Wednesday. The markets were also influenced by the upcoming three-day weekend and the WASDE report, which is expected to focus on both supply and demand.

Nelson believes that corn yields are close to 178.7 bu. per acre, as estimated in Allendale's farmer surveys. However, he notes that the market has not yet priced in low yield numbers implied by crop tours earlier this year.

Cattle futures saw a sharp increase on Thursday, attributed partly to short covering and improvements in cash trade. Nelson suggests that the market may have reached a stability point after a tough news flow in August.
