A surge in copper thefts has hit Granada, Spain, as thieves target external air conditioning units to sell their copper content.

The National Police are investigating five reported cases of stolen outdoor air conditioning units from various properties in the city, including a neighborhood association, a health center, and a dance school.

The units are ripped out or stripped for their copper coil and metal casings, which are then sold as scrap metal. This rise in thefts coincides with increasing copper prices in the markets.
