Greek Building Explosion Highlights Importance of Gas Leak Detection

Investigations into the explosion that destroyed a building in Athens' Plaka neighborhood are ongoing, but experts say a gas leak likely caused the blast. According to Professor Dimosthenis Sarigiannis, an environmental scientist, natural gas itself has no color or smell; it's only when tracer molecules are added as a safety measure that people can detect leaks by smelling the familiar 'rotten egg' odor.

Without these molecules, leaks would go undetected and pose a deadly threat. The professor advises anyone who notices this smell at home to report it immediately. Even small leaks from individual boilers or water heaters can quickly become hazardous situations.

The law in Greece does not require gas leak detection systems for every household appliance, but certain conditions do mandate their installation. For instance, if a boiler is located in a basement or an enclosed space without proper ventilation, a safety system must be installed.
