Greek Households Face Higher Energy Costs This Winter
Greece is bracing for higher energy costs this winter as heating oil, natural gas, and electricity prices all rise. Heating oil is expected to start the season at a price similar to those seen during previous energy crises, with an estimated current average price of €1.96 to €1.97 per liter nationwide. Natural gas has seen a smaller increase, but still stands at approximately 39.8% higher than last year's average final price.
The government is preparing measures to limit the impact on households, including potential support for heating oil and natural gas costs. One objective is to keep the price of heating oil below €1.75 per liter, which would narrow the price gap between natural gas and heating oil. The government is also considering a significant increase in the heating allowance.
Rising fuel and natural gas prices have spread across Europe, prompting governments to consider measures such as tax cuts, subsidies, and price caps. Electricity wholesale prices have accelerated this year, rising 77.5% since May and pushing household tariffs higher. The average retail price of electricity was approximately €0.170 per kWh in September 2025, but is estimated to finish close to €0.25 per kWh, representing an increase of about 47%.
