Gujarat Hosts India's First LNG Diesel Dual Fuel Train
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has flagged off India's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) diesel dual fuel train in Gujarat. The train, which runs on a mix of LNG and diesel, aims to reduce diesel consumption by as much as 40% on medium distance routes while also reducing carbon emissions.
The train was flagged off from the Sabarmati railway station in Ahmedabad on September 27, 2026. According to officials from Western Railway, the inaugural route runs from Sabarmati to Mahesana Junction, covering a distance of 62 kilometers in about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
The dual fuel technology uses an on-board cryogenic LNG tank that can hold between 950 and 1,000 kg of usable gas. The train has two 1,400 horsepower Driving Power Cars, which were converted to run on the new fuel system. INOX India provided the storage and regasification systems, while CLH Gaseous Fuel Applications completed the engine modifications.
The trial data published by Western Railway indicates a fuel cost saving of approximately Rs 11.9 lakh per year for each converted Driving Power Car. For a complete eight coach rake containing two such cars, estimated annual savings reach Rs 23.9 lakh.
