Gulf States Bypass Strait of Hormuz, Reducing Iranian Leverage

The Strait of Hormuz has long been a chokepoint for global oil supplies, controlled by Iran and holding hostage over 20% of total global output. However, with recent efforts to bypass this critical waterway, Iran's leverage is rapidly evaporating.

A joint initiative between Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE aims to expand their overland capabilities and build major land-oil transit alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz. This move reflects a shared vision of insulation from maritime blockades.

Iraq, long reliant on foreign routes, is also deep in discussions with US energy companies to tap into these bypass efforts. Pipelines are being expanded from Basra and Kirkuk in Iraq to Ceyhan in Turkey and the port of Baniyas in Syria.

The strategic implications of these projects cannot be overstated. Iran's ability to instantly paralyze the global economy through mining or blocking the Strait is no longer credible, as the Gulf states are demonstrating that infrastructural independence is their best defense against Iranian oil blackmail.

Experts argue that Iran's continuous exploitation of the Strait of Hormuz serves as a definitive argument against allowing it to achieve nuclear-weapons capability. A nuclear-armed Iran would possess unchecked immunity to shut down global trade, making its behavior with respect to the Strait a preview of what its foreign policy under a nuclear umbrella might look like.

The world has already caught a glimpse of the extortion and volatility Tehran is willing to deploy when it possesses conventional weapons. Giving such a regime the ultimate weapon is an unacceptable risk to global peace.
