Gulf Tensions Tighten Hormuz Strait as Global Oil Supply Faces Crunch
The global oil and LNG market is bracing for a potential supply crunch due to ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. Producers are unlikely to make significant adjustments to their production levels at an upcoming OPEC+ meeting on Sunday, with current voluntary supply cuts set to be reversed.
The US has been examining its emergency reserves, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright noting that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is at a 44-year low. The country may consider swapping Venezuelan heavy crude for lighter grades to restock its supplies.
Natural gas fundamentals are mixed, with increased US production and LNG exports on one hand, but constrained Gulf LNG supply on the other. Asian spot LNG prices have more than doubled pre-war levels due to rare ship-to-ship transfers outside Hormuz.
