Harvest Progress Slows in Western Canada Amid Global Wheat Market Concerns
Harvest progress has been slower than expected in Western Canada, but market analyst Jon Driedger of Leftfield Commodity Research believes farmers have made significant gains over the past week. According to Driedger, most areas are now around 45% complete with harvest, a far cry from the initial concerns that nearly every province would be behind schedule.
While some crops have been affected by weather conditions, quality is holding up better than feared for many cereals, including wheat and oats. However, durum and pulses are experiencing challenges due to late-harvesting conditions.
The global wheat market remains a concern due to supply chain disruptions from the Black Sea region. Despite the ongoing issues, wheat prices have pulled back slightly in recent weeks, with some analysts attributing this to the strong incentive for Russia and Ukraine to find alternative channels for exporting their wheat.
