Hawkish Jackson Hole Signal Meets Beijing's Gold Accumulation
Gold prices have been caught between two opposing forces: China's central bank has been quietly accumulating gold, purchasing over 40 tonnes in June, its second-largest monthly acquisition since 2025. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish comments at Jackson Hole triggered a sharp reversal, with gold declining by 3.2% to $4,454.60 per ounce on Friday.
Despite this pullback, gold remains roughly 10% higher over a 30-day horizon and has gained 29% year-over-year. Central banks continue to build reserves methodically, seemingly indifferent to the interest rate calculus emanating from Washington.
The divergence between strategic buyers and short-term traders is evident, with central banks adding to reserves while consumer demand for gold jewelry remains weak due to high prices. The price floor appears relatively secure over the medium term, but the near-term direction remains hostage to Fed commentary and geopolitical headlines.
