Silver Rallies, But Fed Rate Hikes Keep Upward Momentum in Check
Silver prices have rebounded from recent lows, but the threat of further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes continues to limit upside potential.
The Fed's monetary policy stance is a primary driver for silver prices. When the Fed raises interest rates, it increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like silver, typically pushing prices down.
Silver's rebound is partly attributed to short-covering and physical demand from industrial sectors, but the metal's inability to sustain rallies reflects the overhang of rate-hike expectations. The US dollar's strength, often inversely correlated with silver, also remains a headwind.
The Silver Institute projects that industrial demand will reach a record high this year, driven by photovoltaic and automotive sectors. This fundamental support helps explain why silver has not fallen as sharply as some analysts feared in the face of rate hikes.
