Healey Abruptly Shifts Stance on Gas Pipeline Expansion
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has made an unexpected shift in her stance on energy policy. In a letter to U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, she urged the Trump Administration to expedite federal review of the expansion of the Algonquin gas pipeline, known as the Reliable Affordable Resilient Enhancement (RARE) Project.
The project aims to provide gas supply to 600,000 customers and lower gas bills by $40 million each year. Governor Healey emphasized that this approach is part of her 'all-of-the-above' strategy that includes solar, wind, storage, nuclear, geothermal, hydro, and gas.
She also highlighted that most of the construction work will involve upgrading existing infrastructure, rather than new development. The additional gas supply is expected to reduce reliance on higher-cost imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Everett LNG Terminal.
