Healey Seeks Faster Review for Enbridge's RARE Pipeline Expansion Project
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has asked the Trump administration to expedite the review of a natural gas pipeline expansion project in New England. The Reliable Affordable Resilient Enhancement (RARE) project, developed by Enbridge's unit, aims to provide gas supply to 600,000 customers and lower gas bills by $40 million each year.
The project will expand capacity by around 75 million cubic feet per day, which is expected to reduce reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Constellation Energy's Everett LNG import terminal in Massachusetts. Healey emphasized the need for an all-of-the-above approach that includes solar, wind, storage, nuclear, geothermal, hydro, and gas to bring more energy supply into Massachusetts.
The RARE project is currently undergoing federal environmental review through the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Enbridge targets a 2028 in-service date for the project, which will transport roughly 3.1 billion cubic feet per day of gas through 1,131 miles of pipe in New Jersey, New York, and New England.
