Hecla Mining Surges 8.69% as US Stock Market Sees Broad-Based Gains
The US stock market saw gains across the board on September 2, with the Dow rising by 0.56%, the S&P 500 increasing by 0.47%, and the Nasdaq climbing by 0.45%. This came after August's ADP private job growth came in lower than expected at 38,000, which cooled expectations of rate hikes and led to a rebound in precious metals and utilities.
Among the standout performers was Hecla Mining (HL), which surged 8.69% to close at $20.77. Despite silver prices only rising less than 1%, Hecla's stock price jumped significantly, adding approximately $1.1 billion to its market value in a single day.
The divergence in performance between Hecla and other mining companies highlights the difference in how silver and gold react to employment data. While Hecla and other silver-focused companies saw significant gains, Newmont, which is more focused on gold, rose by only 2.06%, while AngloGold Ashanti actually closed down 0.28%.
Several mining companies have been transitioning from traditional mining operations to AI data centers, but the contracted megawatts and lease amounts are still primarily tied to metal market rates. The value of these contracts is ultimately determined by who pays, not just the contracted capacity.
