Hegazy Calls for Comprehensive Reopening Plan for Hormuz
Maritime expert Capt. Saleh Hegazy emphasizes that for the Strait of Hormuz to fully reopen, it must be accompanied by comprehensive measures ensuring safe and unrestricted navigation.
Hegazy suggests a reopening plan should include mine clearance, hydrographic surveys, securing navigation routes, restoring internationally recognized traffic arrangements, and coordinating a gradual return of commercial vessels and oil tankers.
According to Hegazy, the International Maritime Organization's existing Traffic Separation Scheme in the Strait of Hormuz was proposed by Iran and Oman in 1968.
The expert predicts that a full reopening without restrictions would lead to lower oil prices due to reduced risk premiums associated with one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints.
Hegazy highlights that Egypt would benefit significantly if the reopening were accompanied by the restoration of safe passage for Saudi vessels through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, particularly given the kingdom's East-West pipeline and Red Sea ports network that involves Egypt's SUMED pipeline and Sidi Kerir terminal.
