Henry Hub Natural Gas Prices Drop Amid Record Production

Natural gas prices at the Henry Hub averaged $2.93 per million British thermal units from June through August, marking a 6% decrease compared to the same period last year.

This summer saw exceptionally hot weather, which typically increases electricity demand for air conditioning and puts upward pressure on natural gas prices. However, this year's prices remained lower due to increased renewable electricity generation, record natural gas production, and ample natural gas inventories.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, solar generation increased by an estimated 19.4 billion kilowatt-hours compared to last summer, while wind generation rose by 9.3 billion kilowatt-hours. Natural gas-fired power plants still met some of the higher demand, but their increase was smaller at 7.5 billion kilowatt-hours.

The strong production and sustained injections into natural gas storage have maintained ample inventories despite increased summer demand. The administration forecasts that Lower 48 states working natural gas inventories will total 3,985 billion cubic feet by the end of October, a 5% increase over the five-year average.
