Hinson's Oil Ties Exposed Amid Iran War Earnings Bonanza
US Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) has been accused of taking thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from major oil companies while voting against ending military hostilities in Iran.
Hinson's campaign and political action committees have received $64,500 from oil and gas companies since 2021, with Chevron, ExxonMobil, Valero, Phillips 66, and the American Petroleum Institute (API) among those contributing. The donations came despite Hinson voting six times against measures to limit or end US military involvement in Iran and Lebanon.
The war in Iran disrupted global energy markets, causing international crude oil prices to surge to an average $96 per barrel in the second quarter of 2026. ExxonMobil reported earning $14.53 billion between April and June, more than double its profit from the same period in 2025.
Iowans paid a steep price for the war, with the average price for a gallon of gasoline in Iowa jumping to $3.78 last month, up from roughly $3.00 last year. Despite this economic strain, Hinson continued to vote against congressional attempts to pull US forces out of the region.
