Hong Kong Gets First Copper Miners ETF as Prices Reach Record Levels
Hong Kong has welcomed its first dedicated copper miners exchange-traded fund (ETF), launched by Mirae Asset Global Investments. The Global X Copper Miners ETF listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong on September 15, 2026, with an issue price of US$1 per share and a board lot of 100 shares.
The new ETF tracks the Solactive Copper Miners Index, providing diversified exposure to companies involved in global copper production. This coincides with record copper prices in 2026 due to tight inventories outside the US, weak mine supply, potential trade restrictions, and long-term demand from electrification and digital infrastructure.
The launch of the ETF also highlights the challenges facing copper supply, including declining ore grades, higher development costs, and lengthy approval periods for new projects. The latest projections indicate a 25% copper supply gap by 2035, with existing and announced projects expected to fall short of requirements during the next decade.
The Global X Copper Miners ETF offers investors an alternative route into the copper market, investing in listed mining companies rather than physical copper or futures contracts. However, it also exposes investors to commodity-price risk and equity-market risk, as well as operational disruptions and currency fluctuations.
