Hong Kong is taking a major step toward becoming a global hub for digital gold transactions. The city plans to launch an interbank tokenised gold project, introducing a gold token that represents a standard 400-ounce gold bar. This initiative references HAU, Hong Kong’s ticker for gold prices, which was introduced earlier this year.

The announcement came from Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui Ching-yu during the annual Fintech Week event on Monday. Hui emphasized that the project builds on the experience gained from Project Ensemble, a pilot tokenisation and digital currency initiative launched by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in 2024.

Analysts view this move as a crucial development in Hong Kong’s efforts to establish itself as a key player in the global precious metals market. The tokenised gold bar is expected to enhance the city’s digital and metal hub ambitions, leveraging blockchain technology to streamline gold transactions.
