Hong Kong Launches Yuan-Denominated Gold Futures Contract
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) announced plans to launch a yuan-denominated gold futures contract early next year. This move is part of Hong Kong's efforts to position itself as an international gold hub and raise the yuan's global status.
The government-owned clearing system in Hong Kong mirrors the financial infrastructure used by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) in London. The new gold price ticker, HAU, will be introduced to ensure that Hong Kong gold prices are fully accessible to global market participants.
Hong Kong's Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christopher Hui Ching-yu, presented a five-year plan for the region's financial development last week. The plan aims to promote yuan internationalization and develop Hong Kong's gold market, among other goals.
