Hong Kong Stocks Rally on Semiconductor, Gold Strength
Hong Kong stocks rebounded on August 5 as semiconductor and gold shares led the charge. The Hang Seng Index, Hang Seng Tech Index, and Hang Seng China Enterprises Index all closed in positive territory.
The Hang Seng Tech Index stood out with a gain of 0.97%, while the broader Hang Seng Index rose 0.24%. The semiconductor sector was a major driver of the gains, with SMIC and Hua Hong Semiconductor posting robust increases. Analysts noted that demand for AI computing power is fueling the rally in memory chip stocks.
The gold market also saw significant movement, with spot prices breaking through $4,120 per ounce to set a fresh all-time high. This sparked buying interest across the sector, with China Gold International leading the charge. Major Chinese tech platforms Alibaba and Tencent Holdings also advanced, but not all names were positive, with Xiaomi underperforming.
