Hormuz Blockade Slows UK Gas Inventory Buildup
UK natural gas prices have stabilized at around 157 pence per therm, despite concerns over a potential winter supply crunch. The current standoff between Iran and the US is exacerbating the situation, with President Donald Trump stating that there are no talks or scheduled talks with Iran and that the US naval blockade remains in place.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which Qatari LNG tankers typically transport gas to Europe, has seen traffic grind to a halt. This reduced inflow, combined with summer heatwaves driving up demand for gas-fired power generation, is slowing the buildup of gas inventories.
As a result, traders are worried that Europe may enter the winter heating season with insufficient reserves, keeping upward pressure on gas prices.
